Foreword

Myth and folklore have been rich in Purgatory since the first known instances of demonkind. The story of Sano has permeated common myth for at least 530,000 years, mainly through oral tradition. In doing so, it has accumulated details and chapters which reflect the various struggles of the times. Generally, the story is not interpreted to be a literal depiction of historical events, yet neither are they presented as abstract parables for the sake of imparting moral or religious lessons (see Book Of Entrails, False Worlds). Most demon folktales do not ascribe to specific eras or timeframes, but the myth of Sano is explicitly set during the Primordial War, dating its starting point somewhere between 801,000 - 438,000 AL. The myth of Sano is also notable for its political and satirical bent. It has an unusually critical lens of Satan' campaign - unthinkable for the time it was penned, during which most stories were propaganda commissioned by the Satanic church. The characters featured in Sano's story are young, inexperienced vagrants, refugees, deserters (a particularly taboo subject), and life under Satan's campaign is a chaotic, violent struggle.

Despite its unusual nature, the myth of Sano has remained an important cornerstone of demon culture. It fades back into relevancy time and time again, in tandem with times of strife and cultural shifts. Demonkind is drawn time and time again back to the tale of one unremarkable girl's misery, especially with youth (particularly diaspora youth scattered by the Heaven-Hell conflict) who resonate with its authority-critical lens. Even demons conditioned since birth for self-interest respond with an unusual amount of empathy; it implores them to imagine a demon they may have been in another life - a sibling, an errant offspring, a reincarnated self.

What has been recovered of the Sano myth is pieced together by scholars from transcriptions of oral tradition, translated excerpts of recovered written editions, and restored artworks. Due to its expansive and widespread nature, the full transcription is updated as material presents itself.
